Who should you choose and why?

✋ Most important consideration

  • Apigee and MuleSoft provide most of the features you’d want to support the entire API lifecycle, however, Apigee is better suited for microservices-based architectures while also being more expensive than MuleSoft.

🤔 Strongly consider Apigee over MuleSoft if

  • You want a better API design tool with best-in-class API versioning features.
  • You’re using GraphQL, OAS 2.0, and/or OAS 3.0.
  • You’re focussed on monetizing your APIs.

🤔 Strongly consider MuleSoft over Apigee if

  • You want your APIs to be able to be generated automatically by the platform.
  • You want a test console for your APIs that doesn’t require you to write code.
  • You’re looking for API mediation features related to message transformation, protocol conversion, and service call formatting.
  • You need prebuilt API specifications and mappings based on specific business functions and industry verticals.

📝Other Notes

  • Apigee has better API traffic management.
  • Access to logs and documentation is much easier in Apigee compared to MuleSoft.
  • Apigee provides better support for single sign-on using SAML 2.0 in comparison to MuleSoft.
  • Both Apigee and Mulesoft Anypoint API Manager are expensive products, but they differ in how they price. Apigee comes with a consumption-based pricing model and MuleSoft’s is based on deployed API volume.
  • MuleSoft Anypoint Manager provides a client SDK to auto-generate client-side code whereas Apigee does not provide such capabilities.
