What is Process Mining?

Process Mining is an extension of the principles of Data Mining, applied to Process Analysis. While Data Mining leverages data stored in an enterprise to provide decision-making insights to executives, Process Mining extends this to the domain of Process Analysis by leveraging data in modern systems to trace, track, and identify process patterns. As an output, Process Mining provides an enterprise with a transparent view of a process, outlining delays, bottlenecks, and governance issues. This lays a solid foundation for any Business Process Management (BPM) initiative in the enterprise, whether it be deploying process automations or improvements. The system data gathered should have the following three attributes: Case ID, which is the identifier of the task in the process (e.g., AccountID, LoanID, Name, or any other identifiable information from the task in the process); Activity, which is the purpose of that task in the process or, simply put, provides information on what happened in the process at this point in time (e.g., Inspect Damage, Obtaining Approval, or Register Claim); and Timestamp, which is when this task occurred in the process (date/time of occurrence). All of these attributes play a role in analyzing the output from Process Mining.

Process Mining Use Cases

Procure-to-Pay

Owing to the complex nature of procurement operations, it is difficult to bring visibility and compliance into procurement processes. Process mining, with its ability to connect various information systems like SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, etc., provides a unified view of procurement operations. This is achieved through real-time alerts, notifications, reminders, and actionable next steps.

Process Discovery

For process mining, providing an intuitive process map is a foundational use case. End users should be able to visualize the process and conduct follow-up analysis such as filtering activities by time and cases, zooming in and out to focus on a particular point of interest in the process, and performing bottleneck analysis.

Process Conformance

The majority of enterprises rely on manual methods to understand if the business process is working as expected or not. This leads to unreliable outcomes as no two groups of employees perceive the process in a similar way, and hence bias and interference creep in. This can also create blind spots for governance and compliance issues that might have proper due but remain hidden. Automated process conformance via process mining is helpful to remove the external bias and provide transparent analysis of business processes.

Process Remedy

Process mining has the capability to provide unbiased process improvement guidance to enterprises by looking at the process from multiple perspectives and creating simulations. Enterprises can leverage process mining to simulate business processes in various scenarios, such as automation, removal of tasks, and creation of tasks.

Auditing and Compliance

Auditing, whether financial or information system auditing, is an important issue for various stakeholders in an enterprise. Process mining provides the capability to plug in governance and compliance gaps in the enterprise by providing real-time analysis to the decision-makers.
